For $100k a year and the possibility of real career growth? Asking for a friend...

Depends on the route. I’d say up to an hour in regular traffic, maybe an hour and a half?

I have pretty much set my limit at one hour each way. I've done 45 minutes and it's not bad in the summer but sucks ass in the winter. But here to get that amount of time you have to be traveling a fair distance.

1.5-2 hours

Around an hour. In this area at least.....
The former IT guy where I work drove in from West Virginia for a salary of a bit more than half of that. Real commitment right there.

To me it really depends on where you live.
I really wouldn’t go more than half an hour by me. But I’m in a very populated area and there are jobs right around the corner.
If I as somewhere rural and work was hard to come by I would understand an hour commute
![]() 07/02/2016 at 21:55 |

What is your commute currently? What kind of commute will it be? Sitting in traffic? Public transit? Nice back roads?
How much more is $100k compared to what you make now? How bad is your growth potential?
For my personal situation I would take any great job and just move closer. But I'm single and unattached.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 21:58 |

I currently drive about an hour for around half that. The new commute would be some days an hour and some days an hour and a half, variable schedule.

And the growth potential with the current company is unclear, but the prospects going at the current rate are low. Small company with no plans to expand.

For the pay, I would sacrifice a little time until I could move closer. As long as it’s in the same general area as I live

I just left a $50k/year job in the Chicago area that had a 1.5-2 hour commute each way. I went down to a $44k/year in Iowa with an 8.5 minute commute each way.
For an honest 100k job with proven growth? I think an hour each way is fair. More than that and you need to consider moving.

if you could get something fun for the drive........ the distance wouldnt matter.
down the windy fun road i daily, an hour means nothing........

Up to 2 hours depending on traffic of commute and time of day.
About an hour is what I give myself right now, but this includes a stop at gas station for a breakfast sandwich & coffee.
I have done 1.5 hours on interstate away from the city and its not too bad either.
I would do 2 hours even if it was over 100 miles. But at that amount I would look into moving closer eventually if it looks to be a solid future.
I moved close to where our office is to drive work trucks, pick up and go so I didn’t have to back track to job sites. It has worked out well for me, as I think I drive my car 1/2 the time anyway.
Good luck.

It depends on the commute. Easy highway mileage/back roads 1-1.5 hours. Bumper to bumper traffic that crawls? You’d have to pay me a lot more than $100k to do that day in and day out.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 22:13 |

Half of whatever you’re currently doing.

My current commute is 30-60 minutes to work, and then 60-90 to home because of how Denver traffic is. It’s not the worst, really. I think if I liked the new job and was making that much money I’d be okay with 90 minutes each way.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 22:30 |
|
I don’t know, maybe around 90 minutes by car? $100,000 is about four times my current income, but my commute rocks: <10 minutes on foot.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 22:42 |

In traffic, 30 minutes, no traffic 60 minutes. I know myself well enough that more than an hour per day stuck in traffic is worth a significant pay cut.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 22:48 |
|
And a variable schedule means id only be doing the 90 minute thing 1-2 times a week with the remaining days being about an hour. I’m considering all options at this point.

Yeah, then I’d be for it. Do you live in a place that has winter, though? My commute can double or triple in bad snow. Fortunately we really don’t get it that badly here, and an extention to the light rail line opens by my house this winter so I could choose to leave my car behind when it gets really bad.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 22:54 |

Up to 2 hours. Current commute just to get to school is 1 hour, or 1.5+ hours if MTA fucks everybody.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:00 |

We do get winters, and people lose their minds in snow. If it starts mid day I can see how I could have problems getting home. But If it’s the day before or whatever, I would just call out.

Take the new job, NO QUESTION
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:25 |

For the right job, I’d consider up to 2 hours. To start - if it was much more than an hour, I’d move closer within a year or so, but that would be the limit without immediate relocation.

Where do you live, that will help with my answer. Where I currently live the answer would be pretty damn far. Currently I am working towards a job that pays less(no guaranteed pay all commission so it technically depends on me) and I will for sure have to drive about 1 hour and 20 minutes without bad traffic. However it is construction season in the Midwest.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:28 |

I do about 30 in the morning and about an hour to an hour and a half depending on when I leave the office in the afternoon. It's not ideal, but I try to take some hilly, curvy back roads to make it more enjoyable. Btw. That's an hour plus for 23 miles in Atlanta area.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:37 |

I live in on the western outskirts of Northern Virginia. So let’s just call it the DC area.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:42 |

I'm assuming in that area $100k would be the equivalent of what I will probably be making. If it is a jump from what you're making know and the job is better in the long run I would say 90 minutes isn't bad.
![]() 07/02/2016 at 23:46 |

My commute is about an hour each way. I’ve been thinking about looking for something much more local so I can bike (bicycle, scooter, moped...) to work or have a commute under 15 minutes.
Now that I got some kiddos, i don’t want to sit in a car for 2 hours each day.

From western NoVa? Rockville/Germantown - Where is this job you are considering, in-state or out of state (Maryland/WV/PA/DC)?
How long does teh’ Google say your commute would be?
(Eastern NoVA resident here who currently works in Rockville and commutes to and fro’ daily.)
$100k is a nice salary, however it isn’t a ton of money in this area, so housing, gas, train, time, etc should all be seriously considered.

Replied to a reply, but I have another question. Does this job allow for any telecommuting?
![]() 07/03/2016 at 06:41 |

It would be from Gainesville to Rockville. Google tells me it would be around an hour during off-peak times and about 90 minutes during normal rush hour times.

It does not.
